The Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team is the intercollegiate women's basketball program representing Michigan State University. The school competes in the Big Ten Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Spartans play home basketball games at the Breslin Student Events Center on the university campus in East Lansing, Michigan.
History
The Spartans began play in 1972. In 1991, the Spartans made their first ever NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, their first postseason appearance since the 1977 AIAW women's basketball tournament. In 2005, the Spartans won 33 games (a school record), advancing all the way to the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament championship, before losing 84–62 to Baylor. The Spartans have been to 14 NCAA Tournaments in the past 25 years, the most recent being in 2021.
A equipe foi fundada em 1971 e teve muito sucesso ao longo dos anos, vencendo o Campeonato Nacional da NCAA em 2005 e 2011. As Spartans também chegaram ao Final Four da NCAA em outras quatro ocasiões (1997, 2009, 2012 e 2013) e ganharam o Campeonato do Big Ten em 10 ocasiões (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 e 2012).
O atual técnico da equipe é Suzy Merchant, que está no cargo desde 1995. Merchant é um dos treinadores de maior sucesso no basquete universitário feminino, tendo sido nomeado Treinador do Ano da NCAA duas vezes (2005 e 2011) e Treinador do Ano do Big Ten nove vezes (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 e 2012).
As Spartans são conhecidas por seu estilo de jogo rápido e agressivo, que muitas vezes leva a pontuações altas e jogos emocionantes. A equipe também é conhecida por sua forte defesa, que muitas vezes mantém os adversários com pouca pontuação.
